Outside of social media, the dogs have also proven popular in more traditional outlets. One of their owners, Jen Golbeck, is a computer scientist and social media expert who has leveraged her expertise to experiment with strategies that make the posts go viral and for building community around social media accounts. They are part of the first wave of viral dog social media accounts. The accounts were founded after the 2016 United States presidential election as a wholesome retreat from the "overwhelming anger" that flooded social media platforms at the time. The Golden Ratio 4 Twitter account was started in 2016. The death of Queso, a 15-year-old golden and an original member of the family, was widely mourned online. Because of this, their account tends to follow the journeys of the dogs from rescue, through the treatment of their medical conditions, to the end of their lives. The dogs in the family are rescued and usually come in as seniors or with serious medical conditions. They are the protagonists of a popular children's book, "The Golden Ratio: Fun in the Sun" which grew out of a successful Kickstarter campaign, and which grew a companion cookbook. They are present on Twitter, Instagram Snapchat, YouTube, and TikTok and have over 700,000 followers across these platforms along with a podcast. The Golden Ratio 4 is a family of golden retrievers owned by and Ingo Burghardt who are social media influencers, cartoon characters, and media personalities.
